Is Radiation From Monitors Harmful?
During the 90s there was a concern that radiation form monitors can be very harmful, especially for pregnant woman. Because of this concern many companies decided to limit the amount of radiation from monitors, as they didn’t want them to be portrayed as dangerous. This was in the era of CTR monitors which were very big and that is why they might have seemed dangerous. Currently more and more people are using flat LCD monitors, which use less wattage and are a lot lighter. The current research indicates that there is no real danger from monitors and this includes both CTR and LCD. It seems that we may have overestimated the dangers, but I suppose it is better to be safe than sorry.

Illegally Copying DVDs?
Copying of most prerecorded DVDs is not allowed, yet it is easily accessible. That is why I am wondering how many people actually do it. According to different surveys it appears that a large group of population is copying those videos, even thought it is illegal. I mentioned before that it is very accessible and I believe that is why people are doing it. Besides the fact of copying DVDs because it can be done so easily, I also believe that it is being done because there are almost no penalties for doing so. It is true that officially there are large penalties, but in reality hardly anyone is getting sued, so that is why people are not afraid.

What to do When Your Computer Shuts Down
Some time ago I had a problem that my PC was shutting down after being on for a few minutes, especially when I was in graphically rich applications. I noticed that my computer is not as noisy as usual, and I thought that I should check if the fans in my computer are working. I installed a temp. monitoring software and noticed that my computer was switching off when CPU temperature was 120C and this was the confirmation that I needed to know that this indeed was an overheating problem due to fan/fans not working. After inspection I noticed that the CPU fan was not spinning at all, and I replaced the whole cooler along with the heatsink and fan, while making sure that I buy the correct cooler for my computers socket type (in this case 939). I hope that this story may help you if you encounter similar problems.

Largest Wireless Network
Wireless Networks are very useful and I can say that from personal experience as a Pocket PC and notebook user. One of the leading American Universities, namely Duke University has decided to build the largest wireless network ever built. Duke plans the wireless technology to cover the area of it is campus which is six million square feet. This will include 2,500 Cisco access points and it will provide wireless coverage in academic halls, libraries, residence halls and other campus buildings. Duke University has a strategy to implementing new technologies that can enhance the quality of campus life, enable new learning spaces and provide easy access to course materials and resources. The Cisco’s 802.11n technology that is being used for this project offers fast speed and high reliability.

Mini Karaoke Machines As New Toys?
Did you ever feel like you just have to sign from all of the sudden? If that is the case I am sure you might appreciate the idea of a mini karaoke machine which you could carry in your pocket. As a matter of fact it is not only an idea, as this device is available in Japan. It allows you to play songs downloaded from the internet or you can copy songs on special cartridges. What would Japan create such a device? Maybe because they are also the first creators of a karaoke machine and the word itself is derived from Japanese for “empty orchestra”. We will see how popular they will become.

Buying Computer Equipment
A lot of computer owners make purchases such as speakers, routers, case fans, modems, cables etc. Very often some expertise is required to evaluate whether the device or component we are buying is going to be compatible with our computer. From my personal experience I can say that I once bought a heatsink for my PC, but I wasn’t really convinced it will be compatible, even thought the “computer expert” said it would. When I tired to install it at home I noticed that indeed it is not compatible so I returned the item to my store. My advice is to buy computer components or equipment only from stores which allow you to return the item, because there are so many different brands and products that you may never know if that specific part will be compatible with your computer.

Annoying Gadgets
Do you want to make a prank on someone? All you can to do is hide an annoying sound gadget somewhere during daylight and when it will be dark the sound gadget is going to simulate the sound of dripping water or barking dog. If a person decides to switch on the light to find the source of the sound, then the gadget is going to switch off itself. The idea behind the gadget is brilliant, as it will be very hard to actually detect the source of the sound. If you got interested then I can tell you that this device costs approximately $10, so it won’t be a big investment. Have fun!

LCD TV More Popular Than CTR TV
LCD TV’s were introduced long time ago, but it takes time for some technologies to be really popular and while in the beginning of 2006 LCD TV shipments amounted to less then 20%, right now they amount to more than 50%. The transition is quite logical and not unexpected, as it not only made the TV’s lighter and easier to move, but the LCD technology also supports different sizes of TV’s. You can have an LCD TV which is smaller than 20 inches and at the same time also offer very large screens for really demanding. Personally I do not have any CTR equipment in my home anymore, as I believe that LCDs are superior.

Computer Cases and the Noise of Your Computer
If you are exposed to a lot of noise during your daily work, you might want to spend the rest of your day apart from work in a silent environment. If you are a computer geek, you probably spend a lot of time in the evening in front of your PC. It turns out that even choosing the right computer case contributes a lot to the lack of noise coming from your computer. Generally the bigger case you buy, the more likely you will be able to put a bigger fan in it. And the bigger fan means less noise as it does not have to spin so fast. Go and give it a try. It might be worth your effort to have a little bit less noisy apartment.
